A Safer more considerate ithaca

 A SHIFT IN SAFETY

Ithaca does not feel as safe as it once did. It is not that violent crime is rising, but selfish behaviors and petty crimes have chipped away at our quality of life.

EVERYDAY DISRUPTIONS

Walk downtown and you see it. Bikes, e-bikes, and scooters zip along sidewalks and the Commons, often with headphones in and little regard for pedestrians. At the very least, riders should follow traffic rules and respect one-way streets.

MEETING PEOPLE IN NEED

I work downtown and often meet people who are struggling. When someone asks me for money for food, I always offer to buy them food. Sometimes they accept, and I am glad to help.

THE PROBLEM OF AGGRESSIVE PANHANDLING

But the aggressive panhandling is different. Too often, it is people from out of town, pushing into personal space with the same request for bus fare. It makes downtown feel less welcoming for residents and visitors alike.

PRACTICAL STEPS FORWARD

We need solutions. Let’s post clear dos and don’ts for bikes and scooters, and make sidewalks safe for walking again. Just as importantly, let’s encourage a culture of respect and responsibility.

KEEPING ITHACA’S SPIRIT ALIVE

Ithaca is made up of many groups and individuals. Together, we create the energy and character that make our city special. If we want it to remain that way, we must treat one another with kindness and keep safety at the heart of our community.

Respectfully,

Gepe Zurenda
